South Africa: Parliament Confirms Resignation of MP

Resigned SA MP Mduduzi Manana

Pretoria, South Africa, July 25, 2018/ — South Africa’s Parliament confirmed that Speaker of the National Assembly Ms Baleka Mbete has, this morning, received a letter of resignation from Member of Parliament Mr Mduduzi Manana.

The resignation is with immediate effect, effective from 24 July 2018.
Mr Manana was scheduled to appear before Parliament’s Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests in relation to the conduct for which a Court found him guilty.
In the light of his resignation, this matter automatically falls away as both the Joint Committee and the Ethics Code have no jurisdiction over former Members – except in instances where MPs abuse parliamentary entitlements beyond their term of office.

Mr Manama, who is also a former deputy higher education and training minister pleaded guilty to a nightclub assault said in his resignation letter:  “I have decided to voluntarily withdraw my membership from the National Assembly after almost 10 years of active participation in Parliamentary politics”.

“This will give me ample time to focus my renewed energies on the work of my political organisation ahead of the 2019 general elections‚ my academic commitments and my business interests”, he added.

Mr Manama’s resignation comes at the heels of  the former deputy minister pleading guilty to three charges brought against him for an incident at the Cubana restaurant in Fourways‚ Johannesburg‚ last year.
