The Committee for Joint Action (CJA), a leading pressure group has showered praises on the Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama for better management of prices of petroleum products in the West African country.
The country’s National Petroleum Authority (NPA) some two weeks ago announced a 10% reduction in fuel prices after coming under public backlash following a slump in crude oil prices on the world market.
A leading member of the CJA, Kwesi Pratt explained to journalists in Accra on Thursdays that there was a clear difference in the pricing formula under the erstwhile Kufuor administration than that of President Mahama.
Mr Pratt was reacting to calls from the opposition parties and civil society organisations on the need for the NPA to further reduce prices of petroleum products.
He said “When you compare the rates of increase and their performance to petroleum pricing increasing at their time and what is happening now, there is a world of difference. Do not let us be deceived that political propaganda of the opposition parties on the reduction in petroleum prices.
Mr Pratt who is also the managing editor of the Insight newspaper added that “What happened under the Kufour’s administration with regards to petroleum price increases was terrible. Under the NPP when there were price reduction on crude oil they told us that they are using the windfall profits to service the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) debt.”
