Ohenewaa Human Rights Advocacy headed by Lawyer Mary Ohenewaa Afful, has collaborated with the Ga West Municipal Education Directorate and Nsawam – Adoakyiri District Education Directorate of Ghana Education Service to educate school children on Domestic and Sexual Violence Laws.
The 18 day programme which commenced on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 and ends on Friday October 29, 2021, is expected to benefit a total of 52,688 school children.
The programme focuses on prevention of crime by creating awareness of the various types of violence, educating the school children on the criminal offences and their jail terms and letting them know the jail terms associated with these acts of violence.
This will prevent them from committing acts of criminality which will lead them into prison.

The programme is also meant to protect school children who are likely to become victims of crime or future offenders.
According to the data from Domestic Violence and Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service over the years, shows that more females continue to suffer from rape and defilement and the figure keeps going higher and higher.
Furthermore, records from the court systems and prisons also show a high rate of criminal offenders from ages 19 to 26 who end up being jailed for committing various criminal offences.

“Thus, by teaching these school children at that basic level will be an easy way to educate them on specific areas of the law that pertains to our day to day lives and at that first stage as a primary prevention and also as a major step in preventive crime.
We need to send a STRONG SIGNAL out there of helping fight against ALL FORMS OF ABUSE”, the Executive Director of the Advocacy, Lawyer Ohenewaa Afful, said.

The advocacy programme is sponsored by Kalyppo Juice, the best beverage for all school children, Foodtech Ltd, producers of healthy snacks for all school children such as snappy, cornelly and no.8), and Ashfoam, producers of quality mattresses, sofas, home wares, school items such as uniforms, PE kits, metal bunk beds, bags, bedsheets, towels, among others.
