
Staff volunteers of MTN Ghana are to undertake various activities to promote education during the telecom giant’s annual 21st Days of Y’ello Care initiative in the country.
The activities include: refurbishment and provision of equipment/furniture to create a resource centre for the School for the Deaf at Mampong in the Eastern Region; provision of DSTV Resource Centre for selected Senior High Schools (SHSs); provision of DSTV Resource Centre for selected Senior High Schools (SHSs); and development of an educational portal for teachers.
The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Ebenezer Asante who disclosed this at the launch of the 2016 edition of the programme in Accra explained that the resource centre to be set up for the School for the Deaf would be equipped with an LCD TV, Voice to text Soft to aid teaching and learning, microphones/headphones, computers, whiteboards with projector to projection of learning content, among others.
For the provision of DSTV Resource Centre for selected Senior High Schools (SHSs) project, he emphasised that the; “project is in partnership with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and DSTV and includes the provision of a TV and a decoder with an educational bouquet on subjects ranging from Maths and Science to Geography and others to aid teaching and learning”.
Development of an educational portal for teachers-The portal, according to him would provide leads on education, teaching methodology and reading content containing thousands of digitised “best in class” books, book summaries, teaching aids, and recommended story books for Junior High School and best practices in the country.
In addition to these, Mr Asante added that the MNO would stock four selected libraries with books and providing five communities with ICT equipment to facilitate reading clinics and production of DIY (Do it Yourself) Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs) for use by the learners.
During the 21-day period of the programme, MTN employees in all the 22 countries where the company operates volunteer their time and energies to embark on significant development projects to enhance the living standards of selected communities.
The annual staff volunteer programme which runs across the MTN Group footprint from 1st to 21st June was instituted 10 years ago and has grown to become one of the key activities on the MTN calendar.
The MTN Ghana CEO further explained: “Besides being a staff volunteer initiative, 21st Days of Y’ello Care is also a competition amongst MTN operations to ensure the highest staff participation, combined with projects with the most societal impact.”
“The team with the highest impact and participation receives a US$100,000 reward from the Group President & CEO. The award is expected to be re-invested into more community projects”.
In the past 10 years, through 21 days of Y’ello Care initiatives, MTNers in Ghana have successfully implemented projects which continue to brighten lives in their communities.
These included refurbishment, painting and landscaping of dilapidated schools selected by the Ghana Education Service (GES) in its deprived schools category.
