Staff volunteers of MTN Ghana are to construct three “Sheds of Care” for schools under trees in the telecom service provider’s three business districts in the country.
These are Northern, South West and South East business districts. The schools in South West and South East business districts are yet to be identified.
But Volunteers in the Northern business district will provide basic training on internet configuration for students of Limanyiri Junior Secondary School in Wa, the Upper West Regional capital, according to senior officials of MTN Ghana.
The construction of the schools and refurbishment of three selected ICT Centres formed part of the telecom company’s annual Y’ello Care initiative which takes in June every year.
During the 21-day period of the programme, MTN employees in all the 22 countries where the company operates volunteer their time and energies to embark on significant development projects to enhance the living standards of selected communities.
Opening the 21 days Y’ello Care Challenge at Madina Social Welfare, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor, added that MTN would empower teachers by providing computers in selected teacher training institutions, as the telecom giant marks the annual event.
Volunteers will install computers & provide guidance to beneficiaries on how to access research sites, she told participants at the well-attended ceremony where staff volunteers taught head porters on how to read and write.
Since its inception in 2007, MTN Ghana remains the most awarded for volunteerism and projects, picking up the 2008 West and Central Africa (WECA) Regional award, overall Y’ello Care Challenge winners for years 2010 & 2011 and also the Y’ello Care ICT Project prize for 2013 and Y’ello Care Innovation Project for 2014.
These outstanding records, Mrs. Lumor was confident that her team Ghana could win the ultimate challenge once again under theme, “Investing in Education for All”
She noted: “This year another challenge has been added, under which the team that uses social media and most effectively in the implementation of its project (s) also wins the equivalent of 100,000 rand.
Of course, MTN Ghana is focused on winning this social media award so some community in Ghana may benefit”. She, therefore, urged all MTN Ghana employees to embrace the use of social media to share their activities with colleagues, customers and other key stakeholders.
