Tigo Ghana, a leading telecom services provider has extended it philanthropic hand to J Initiative (JI), a grass roots youth and family focused, non-religious, non-governmental organisation (NGO) dedicated to raising awareness on issues that affect families, especially women and children.

To this end, Tigo Ghana presented a cheque worth thousands of Ghana Cedis to the management of JI to enable them undertake the NGO’s programmes and activities of the year.

Presenting the cheque at a short but impressive ceremony in Accra, the Chief Executive Officer of Tigo Ghana, Roshi Motman said the support formed part of the leading telecom company’s corporate social responsibilities.

She reiterated Tigo Ghana’s commitment to the provision of quality telecom services to their numerous customers across the length and breadth of the West African country.

The cheque was received by the Advisory Board Chairperson for JI, the Rev Emmanuel Bredzei.

Commenting on the support, the Executive Director of J Initiative (JI), Madam Awo Aidam Amenyah said: “The support will help us reach a lot more audience with the child online protection materials where the information will be printed major local Ghanaian languages including Ga and Twi”.

She added: “Our aim is to reach out to many more Ghanaian so they can be Digital Literate and exhibit good digital citizenship standards, this support will go a lot way to helping JI realize this objective because it is only when everyone is empowered that we can say for a fact that we all can be safe”.

Madam Amenyah used the opportunity to thank Tigo Ghana for coming to their aid and promised that the money would be used for the intended purpose.

“The appreciation will go to Millicom Foundation, the parent company of Tigo International Cellular for this gesture. It goes to emphasize the fact that they really care about their customer if not they will not be interested in supporting a cause focusing on Child Online Protection (COP)”.

Throwing more light on ongoing and past collaborations, she indicated that early this year they have had a collaborative support from Facebook in producing safety information guides which were launched during the Safer Internet Day 2016.

“Having Tigo now means that we cannot sleep but work assiduously for the children and young people of Ghana”, Madam Amenyah stressed.

“JI sees Child Online Protection (COP) issues to be taken seriously in Ghana lately. One of such major feat is advocacy for the inclusion of COP into the National Cyber Security Policy and Strategy. Our hope is that we want parents and guardians to protect their children online as they do to those offline”.

The NGO also has a partnership with World Vision International Ghana, Facebook-UK, Tigo, Ministry of Interior and Communications Ministry and we are doing some work with the Media Foundation for West Africa, Madam Amenyah stated.
