RESIDENTS of Ghana are expected to pay more for water and electricity following the upward adjustments of water and electricity tariffs in the country.
Ghana’s Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) which increased the tariffs today by 6.54 percent and 4.54 percent for electricity and water respectively said the marginal increases had been necessitated by the shift to crude oil for generation of power occasioned by erratic gas supply from Nigeria.
The Public Affairs Director of the PURC, Nana Yaa Gyantuah, explained that the Commission observed that electricity consumers, for instance, were spending money on alternative sources of energy anyway, which costs them more.
The PURC in a statement signed by its chairman, Dr. Emmanuel Annan also added that the increment was made after careful consideration of all factors which forms the basis of the Automatic Adjustment Formula.
It added that during deliberations, it considered the inadequate supply of electricity which has resulted in a load shedding exercise and its impact on consumers.
The commission advised Ghanaians to conserve energy and water to reduce the challenges being faced with the reliable supply of these two essential commodities.
