Leading Education Policy and Dev’t Expert Joins CDD-Ghana As Senior Fellow

Professor Kwame Akyeampong, a Senior Fellow of the CDD-Ghana

Accra, Ghana//-The Ghana Center for Democratic Development has announced the appointment of Professor Kwame Akyeampong as a Senior Fellow of the Center.

Professor Akyeampong is a professor of International Education and Development with a career spanning over 30 years. His academic career in the field of education began in 1989 at the University of Cape Coast, where he became the Director of the Institute of Education in 2003.

He moved to the University of Sussex, UK, in 2004 and 2020, joined the Open University, UK, where he founded the interdisciplinary Centre for the Study of Global Development (CSGD).

His extensive international career also includes appointment as a visiting Professor at the Centre for the Study of International Co-operation in Education (CICE) at Hiroshima University, Japan, a Senior Fulbright Research Scholar at Georgia State University, Atlanta, USA, and a Senior Policy Analyst with UNESCO in Paris from 2010 to 2013.

He currently co-chairs the Global Education Evidence Advisory Panel (GEEAP) and is a board member of Luminos Fund Foundation and Teaching at the Right Level (TARL) Africa.

Professor Akyeampong was recently nominated as a Chen Yidan Visiting Global Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) and was a 2024 Richard von Weizsacker Fellow at the Robert Bosch Academy in Berlin, Germany.

Professor Akyeampong has researched and published on teacher education and education interventions in several African countries. His latest book “Reconceptualizing the Learning Crisis: Multidimensional Pedagogies of African Accelerated Learning Programs” comes out in June 2025.

Announcing the appointment, which takes effect from April 1, 2025, CDD-Ghana Executive Director Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh said: “We are honoured to welcome Professor Kwame Akyeampong as a Senior Fellow at CDDGhana.

His extensive work in international education, particularly in Africa, has significantly shaped policy and practice. The Center is privileged to have him on board. We believe that his expertise and depth of knowledge will contribute meaningfully toward national policy dialogues and outcomes in the area of education and related social policy fields.”

The position of Senior Fellow at CDD-Ghana is awarded to individuals with distinguished careers in public service, academia, professional practice, or the private sector, who share in the values, vision, and mission of the Center. With Prof. Akyeampong’s appointment, CDD-Ghana now has three Senior Fellows.

The other two are Ambassador Francis Tsegah, a retired career diplomat, lawyer, and former Ambassador of Ghana to Spain, and Professor Takyiwaa Manuh, an Emerita Professor of African Studies at the University of Ghana and a distinguished scholar in African development, women’s rights, and migration.
