Nairobi, Kenya, September 1, 2017//-Three weeks after Kenyans went to the polls to vote for their president – the country’s Supreme Court has cancelled the election results, citing massive electoral irregulatories and called for a fresh election.
In the verdict delivered by Chief Justice David Maraga, the judges by majority observed that there is sufficient evidence to show that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) did not adhere to the law in conducting the election.
The annulment of the election results means the country will go to the polls again within 60 days.
President Uhuru Kenyatta was announced the winner with 54 percent of the vote – but his main rival, Raila Odinga, claimed the election was rigged.
Odinga took his case to the country’s highest court and on Friday, Setembet 1, 2017.
