IFC’s Vice President for Middle East and Africa Deepens Commitment to Ghana

Sérgio Pimenta, IFC Vice President for Middle East and Africa

Accra, Ghana, July 30, 2019 – Sérgio Pimenta, IFC Vice President for Middle East and Africa, is in Ghana for first time since he assumed the role.

Mr. Pimenta met with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, several members of Cabinet, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, a representation of the private sector in Ghana, and development partners.

Mr. Pimenta will also participate in the Meeting of the African Governors of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (“2019 African Caucus”) in Accra and will share IFC’s perspectives on the topic of this year’s Caucus – Africa Beyond Aid: Enhancing Institutional Capacity and Innovative Finance for Sustainable Growth.

On this trip, Mr. Pimenta will sign an agreement with the Government of Ghana to boost private investments in agribusiness under the Invest Ghana Agribusiness Advisory Project.  The signing will be open to the press and will be followed by an interaction with the media. Please note details:

IFC has invested more than $4 billion in Ghana—$2 billion of which has been in the past five years—in agribusiness, education, energy, financial institutions, ports, and tourism. IFC’s Advisory programs are also supporting the Government’s reform agenda to improve the country’s business environment.

Brief biography of Sérgio Pimenta

In this capacity, he oversees all advisory and investment operations in a region with over 600 staff and a committed portfolio of $20 billion, including mobilization.

Previously, Mr. Pimenta was the Director and Global Head of Industry—Manufacturing, Agribusiness, and Services at IFC, managing all operations in these sectors worldwide. He led a team of 350 staff working across more than 100 countries to expand the private sector’s role in addressing urgent development challenges in areas such as agribusiness, health, education, manufacturing, and commercial services.

Mr. Pimenta also served for three years as IFC’s Regional Director responsible for East Asia and the Pacific, based in Hong Kong. Earlier in his career at IFC, he held senior managerial positions in the manufacturing, agribusiness, and services sectors in the Asia Pacific region, the Middle East and North Africa, and Washington, DC.

Prior to joining the World Bank Group through its Young Professionals Program in 1996, Mr. Pimenta worked for the Treasury Department of the French Ministry of Finance, as well as for the Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP).

A Portuguese and French national, he holds an engineering degree from the École Polytechnique, Paris, and a post-graduate degree from the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, Paris.

Instructively, IFC—a sister organization of the World Bank and member of the World Bank Group—is the largest global development institution focused on the private sector in emerging markets.
