How the Growing National Gap in Communication Skills Inspired Ms VOA to Set Up Voice Masterclass

Accra, Ghana//-A leading Ghanaian multilingual Voice-Over Artist (VOA) and communication expert, Ms Evelyn Ann Duncan, has been inspired by Ghana’s growing national gap in communication skills, especially among young people, to launch a booming Voice Masterclass in the country.

With a professional background in the banking and corporate space, Ms Duncan, popularly known as Ms VOA, has spent years observing how communication—particularly tone of voice—directly influences trust, customer experience, leadership effectiveness, and career growth.

Beyond technical competence, she recognised that many opportunities are won or lost simply by how people speak. Ms Duncan understood the power of voice not just as a tool for performance, but as a vehicle for respect, confidence, and influence.

She told African Eye Report she was motivated to address this gap by establishing the Voice Masterclass with Ms VOA—a practical communication training initiative designed to go beyond words, revive cultural respect, and equip people with the skills to communicate confidently and effectively across all spaces.

Ms Duncan explained: “In the Voice Masterclass, I teach practical communication skills centred on tone of voice, clarity, confidence, and cultural respect. Participants learn how tone influences perception, trust, authority, and opportunity—often more than the words themselves—especially in everyday interactions with elders, customers, colleagues, leaders, and family.

What makes her approach unique

What makes my approach unique is that, as a voice-over artist, I made a deliberate decision to use my voice beyond performance—to address a growing national canker. I observed how poor tone of voice continues to cost individuals and institutions valuable opportunities, and I chose to channel my expertise into an initiative that creates lasting societal impact”.

By combining her background in banking, voice artistry, and community development, the Voice Masterclass goes beyond public speaking to address communication as a life skill, leadership tool, and cultural responsibility.

With a strong focus on young people, the training equips participants early with the confidence and discipline to communicate respectfully and effectively across all areas of life, Ms VOA further explained.

Ms Duncan begins by understanding the brand’s identity, values, and audience before any vocal delivery. Every brand has a personality, and her role is to ensure the voice aligns with that identity—whether it requires warmth, authority, empathy, or confidence.

“I pay close attention to tone, pacing, language, and cultural context. I adapt my delivery to suit different audiences by being sensitive to age, background, and purpose, ensuring the message is not only heard but felt and respected.

My approach is rooted in emotional intelligence and professionalism. Whether representing a corporate brand, a community initiative, or a social cause, I use my voice intentionally to build trust, clarity, and connection—allowing the message to resonate authentically across diverse audiences”.

Ms Duncan is deeply influenced by books and teachings that focus on personal growth, leadership, communication, and emotional intelligence. Authors who emphasise self-awareness, discipline, purpose, and the power of human connection have shaped both her personal values and professional approach.

These works have reinforced Ms Duncan’s belief that effective communication goes beyond speaking—it requires intention, empathy, and respect. They’ve helped her understand how tone, mindset, and emotional intelligence influence leadership, relationships, and long-term success.

Beyond books, Ms VOA also learns continuously from real-life interactions, cultural values, and everyday experiences, which all inform her work in voice artistry, training, and community development.

Vision

In the next two to three years, she sees herself expanding the Voice Masterclass with Ms VOA into a nationally recognised communication development programme, impacting more schools, institutions, and communities across the country.

Goal

“My goal is to deepen the initiative’s reach, particularly among young people, while strengthening partnerships with educational bodies, faith-based organisations, and corporate institutions”.

As a multi-faceted professional, she also intends to grow her voice-over work across broader regional and international platforms, using her voice to represent meaningful brands, stories, and social initiatives.

“I’m especially excited about opportunities that combine communication, leadership development, and social impact.

Overall, my focus is on building sustainable platforms where voice, tone, and respectful communication become tools for empowerment—shaping individuals who communicate with confidence, cultural awareness, and purpose, wherever they find themselves”, Ms Duncan told this pan-African news website.

Strong background

Her strong background in banking has strongly shaped her approach to communication, professionalism, and structure in everything she does.

The banking environment demands precision, trust, consistency, and emotional intelligence—especially when dealing with customers, colleagues, and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.

Working in finance taught her the importance of clarity, tone, and intentional communication, because even small misunderstandings can have significant consequences.

This discipline naturally carries into her creative work, where she approaches voice-over and training with the same level of preparation, ethical standards, and attention to detail.

Banking also sharpened her understanding of customer experience and service delivery, reinforcing the idea that professionalism is not only about what is said, but how it is said.

These insights form the foundation of the Voice Masterclass with MsVOA, where communication is treated as a leadership tool that builds credibility, respect, and long-term impact.
