A new study by Compare the Market Australia has revealed that Americans can expect to pay top dollar for most surgeries compared to other nations.
The study, which looked at the average cost of surgeries across six different countries, showed that major surgeries within America typically saw a significant jump in out-of-pocket costs when compared to other countries, with appendectomies seeing a significant jump in costs of around US$7,000 from the second-highest pricing.
It’s not all bad news, though, with an average rhinoplasty in America priced among the cheapest at US$5,995, beaten out only by Germany. Cataract surgeries also saw American averages much more in line with the other countries within the index, with Germany being the outlier for the most expensive.
Canada saw placements as the most affordable country for cataract surgery, gastric bypass and knee replacement, while Germany was the cheapest for hip replacements and rhinoplasties. Australia and the United Kingdom landed the most affordable for the last two studies within the index, colonoscopy and appendectomy, respectively.
