Ghana Textile Workers Issue Ultimatum to Gov’t after A Huge Demo

Textile workers on the street of Accra demonstrating against the government over its failure to re-instate the anti-piracy taskforce

Accra, April 27, 2018//-Hundreds of workers of textile manufacturing companies in Ghana  today issued a one month ultimatum to government to re-instate the anti-piracy taskforce within a month or face their wrath.

The workers issued the ultimatum after a huge demonstration held in Accra. The demonstrators also threatened to vote out the current government in the 2020 elections if they fail to address their concerns.

Addressing the demonstrators later, the spokesperson of the group, Micheal Anglagman said: “They organisers are overwhelmed about this number that has gathered here today, and it is a sign to show government that this is the number of people who are going to go home if they do not allow this piracy to stop”.

He continued:  “We are going to lose all these people and their families, they are going to be starving and there is going to be another burden on the government for employment, so the government must listen to us today.”

The demonstrators held placards with inscriptions such as “taskforce is not a border guard”, “restore the taskforce to the market”, “stop copying our designs and labels”,  among others.

Ghana’s textile manufacturing sectors used to over 300, 000 workers directly, but that number has currently been reduced to about 13, 000.
