Ghana: Teachers Declare Strike Over Unfavourable Working Conditions

Strike

Accra, Ghana, September 10, 2019//-Members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) today joined their sister teacher group, National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) in its industrial action against over unfavourable working conditions.

NAGRAT declared a nationwide strike over the newly introduced Human Resource Management Information System (HRMIS) acquired by the Public Services Commission, unpaid allowances and delayed promotions among others.

The members of NAGRAT and GNAT are beginning their strike action on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 (today).

Six out of the 10 regional branches of the association are embarking on the industrial action following the inability of their employer, the Ghana Education Service (GES) to address the many challenges confronting its members, according to a press statement issued and signed by the NAGRAT President, Angel Carbonu.

GNAT said it had been inundated with calls and agitations from its members across the regions for the strike action and the association was no longer able to control them.

The association is expected to meet the GES and the National Labour Commission on Wednesday over the impasse.
