Ghana Nominates New Electoral Commission Chairperson, Deputies

Accra, Ghana, July 23, 2018//-President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo today nominated the Executive Director of Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Jean Mensa as the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).

 

This follows the removal of Mrs Charlotte Osei and her two deputies, Amadu Sulley and Mrs Georgina Opoku Amankwaa, for stated misbehavior.

A statement signed by the Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei Opare named Mr Samuel Tettey and Dr Eric Asare Bossman as Deputy Chairpersons. Ms Adwoa Asuama has also been named as a member of the Commission. She replaces Mrs Pauline Dadzawa who has proceeded on retirement.

Their nomination was contained in a statement signed and issued by the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare Monday.

Per Article 70(2), President Akufo-Addo has since July 19 written to the Council of State to advice on the nomination of the four.

“President Akufo-Addo is hopeful that the Council of State will discharge its constitutional duty expeditiously, to enable him make these critical appointments to this very important institution of State,” the statement said.

The new nominations by the President followed the removal of Mrs. Charlotte Osei and her two deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwa from office on June 28, 2018 on grounds of “stated misbehaviour and incompetence”.

Mrs. Mensa was a tireless advocate for the review of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution and served as a Commissioner of the Government-established Constitution Review Commission. She is currently a member of the Government Committee tasked with preparing the Affirmative Action Bill.

Adwoa Asuama Abrefa

Ms Asuama Abrefa holds a BA (Hons) in Law and Political Science from the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of and the Ghana School of Law, Accra qualifying as a Barrister at Law (BL).

She has been a Corporate Legal Practitioner for the past thirteen years with extensive knowledge and specialization in corporate law, land/property acquisitions, corporate governance and company secretarial work.

She began her career as an in-house lawyer for the Divestiture Implementation Committee in 2001 before joining Cirrus Oil Services Limited in August 2008 where she started as Manager, Legal Services and rose through the ranks to her current position as the Director, Legal Services. In addition to her repertoire of specializations.

Ms. Asuama Abrefa is currently focused on the oil and gas industry and is pursuing a Masters in Law (Oil and Gas) at the University of Ghana Legon.

She doubles as the Board Chairperson of Tel Energy Limited and Company Secretary for Cirrus Oil Services Limited, Woodsfield’s Energy Resources Limited and Bay Developers and Realty Limited.

Samuel Tettey

He is currently the Director, Electoral Services (Elections) at the Electoral Commission, a position he has held since January 2014. He has held several positions in the Electoral Commission, including District Electoral Officer in the Awutu/Effutu/Senya District, and Central Regional Director of the EC, a position he held from 2005 to 2011.

He has been a member of many Election Observer Missions to countries such as the Kingdom of Lesotho, Guinea and Liberia. He is married with three children.

Dr Eric Asare Bossman

Dr. Bossman is currently the Head of the Department of Political Science at the University of Ghana, Legon. He holds a Master of Arts Degree in International Affairs from Ohio University, and, also, has a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Political Science from West Virginia University.

He is the author of several policy papers in the areas of international politics, democracy in Ghana, and has teaching and research interests in the fields of Comparative Public Policy, Democratic Development, Public Policy Analysis, Human Rights, International Security, Globalisation, and Forced Migration.
