Ghana: National Chief Imam Calls For Peaceful Elections In December

Accra, Ghana, May 24, 2020//-National Chief Imam of Ghana, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu today called on political parties to avoid tendencies that could jeopardise the peaceful atmosphere as the country prepares for the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections.

He made the call at a historic virtual Eid-ul-Fitr celebration at the studio of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) in Accra.

The National Chief Imam who addressed the Muslim community through his spokesperson Shiek Aremeyaw Shaibu, also called on the Electoral Commission, political parties  and other stakeholders to work towards a free, fair, and peaceful elections.

Sheikh Sharubutu used the Eid-ul-Fitr prayer event to appeal to President Akufo-Addo to consider disinfecting the mosques, churches and other places of worship as government prepares to announce final roadmap to easing of remaining COVID-19 restrictions.

This will stem the spread of the COVID-19, he said.

Sheikh Sharubutu noted that the lockdown and restriction on social gathering has “taught Muslims how to focus on the substance of worship of their Maker”.

Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu once again said a prayer for the country, the President, the Vice President, as well as all Ghanaians in and outside the country.

The Muslims were later addressed by the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo before they departed to their various homes for the celebrations.
