Accra, Ghana//-Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed that the man seen in a viral video claiming he wanted to build an Igbo Kingdom in Ghana has apologised and abandoned the idea.
According to Mr. Ablakwa, Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, the man at the centre of the controversy, clarified during a meeting that the video was an old interview recorded in 2013, which he now deeply regrets.
Mr. Ihenetu assured that he has long given up on any plans to establish an Igbo Kingdom in Ghana and has not purchased any land for that purpose. He offered a heartfelt apology to the President, Government, traditional leaders, and the people of Ghana for the confusion and tension caused by the video.
The Foreign Affairs Minister used the opportunity to highlight Ghana’s strong record of peaceful coexistence and its welcoming approach to foreigners, especially fellow Africans and people of African descent.
He stressed that while Ghana remains open and hospitable, visitors and residents alike are expected to respect the country’s laws, customs, and values, and to refrain from making statements or taking actions that could be seen as divisive or unlawful.
Mr. Ablakwa called for calm and reminded the public of the strong and historic ties between Ghana and Nigeria. He urged all to speak with care and avoid turning the issue into something that could spark xenophobic reactions.
“Let us protect our spirit of African unity,” the Minister said, as he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting peace and Pan-African cooperation.
