Ghana Lifts Ban On Global Conferences

Dr Edward Omane BoamahGhana lifted the ban on the organization of international conferences in the country, following the slow of the Ebola virus disease, which has affected nearly 23,000 and killed over 9,000 people in West Africa mainly in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Following the outbreak, the Government of Ghana in August 2014, placed a ban on international conferences, as a measure to prevent the deadly Ebola viral disease in the country.

Though Ghana did not record any Ebola case, the ban has affected revenue of hoteliers in the country following the cancellations of major international conferences which were to be hosted by the country.

Lifting the ban in a statement issued and signed by Ghana’s Minister for communications, Dr. Omane Boamah, said government had lifted the ban forthwith until otherwise directed.

It stated: “Consistent with the firm decision of the ECOWAS Commission that all meetings and missions be suspended unless absolutely essential and well-guided, a moratorium was subsequently placed on all international conferences and international gatherings which had the potential of spreading the Ebola Virus. ………the moratorium placed on the holding of International Conferences in Ghana on account of the recent Ebola outbreak in the sub-region, has been lifted forthwith until otherwise directed”.

The statement added that; “government reviewed and evaluated the interventions instituted to prevent the deadly Ebola Viral Disease in Ghana”.
