Ghana: Labour To Embark On Strike Over Pension Cash

Labour unrestGHANA’S organized labour has given the Mahama-led government a two-week ultimatum to pay funds under the new pension scheme or face their anger.

The Executive Secretary of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), Isaac Bampoe-Addo told journalists in Accra that several attempts to get government to transfer their monies from the Temporary Pension Fund Account managed by the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) to their independent fund managers have proved futile.

He therefore asked the government to respond to this final appeal or face the rage of retiring workers.

“…We have written a petition with no response…we decided that the best approach that will enable the President to listen to us is through discussion,” Bampoe-Addo explained.

Organised Labour led the Ghana Trades Union Congress on Thursday, 24 July, 2014 protested against the current economic challenges and asked “all workers in the formal and informal sector to stay away from work and converge on designated locations in Accra and other regional capitals to demonstrate.”

Responding, President John DramaniMahama pledged that he will treat the concerns of Organised Labour’s demonstration with all the seriousness it deserves as it has inspired him to ‘’work harder.’’
