Residents of Elmina in the Central Region have taken to the streets to protest a salt mining lease granted to a private developer by their traditional leaders.
The demonstrators, clad in red and wielding placards, demand accountability from their traditional leaders.
The placards had inscriptions like, “We want our salt’ and ‘Give us what is due us and don’t sell Elmina.’

The group claims the traditional council has failed to involve the community in decisions regarding the lease of their salt mining lands.
The leader of the demonstrators, John Quayeson, spoke about their concerns.
“We want our leaders to know that the salt is not for them, that is what we want them to understand..”

However, the area’s traditional leaders have dismissed the claims. Nana Nkuando IV, Adontihini of the Edna Traditional Council, described the protest as a calculated effort to tarnish the council’s image.
” It’s an action in nullity,” he said.
