Ghana Education Service Blocks ‘Goldmine’ for Teachers

Minister of Education, Ghana, Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh

Accra, Ghana, July 10, 2019//-Attempts by teachers of Senior High Schools in Ghana to raise additional incomes from extra vacation classes have been blocked by their employer.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) rejected their requests by the schools across the country to organise extra classes for Form 2 students during the current vacation.

In a statement dated July 5, 2019, and addressed to “All Regional Directors of Education” the GES said,”Management of the GES wishes to express its appreciation of the passion and commitment demonstrated towards ensuring improved teaching and learning outcomes”

It stated that, “Management of the GES endorses the idea in principle and wishes to indicate that the need for extra support for such students is the underlying consideration for the introduction of the  ‘Academic Intervention’ introduced as part of the Free Senior High School programme.

“Management of the Service with support of the Ministry of Education has therefore decided that all Form 2 students of Senior High School should return to school on the 19th of August 2019, for teachers to give them additional support under the ‘Academic Intervention’ scheme”, it said.

The GES states clearly that, “The period from now till 19th August should provide some rest for both students and teachers involved” and expressed the expectation that “heads and teachers of various schools will cooperate to make the exercise successful”.
