Accra, Ghana, April 15, 2020//-Former Minister of Communications, Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah has vehemently disagreed with a suggestion by a senior legal practitioner, Sam Okudzeto on the upcoming voters’ registration exercise.
Mr Okudzeto yesterday suggested that the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana should start the voters’ registration exercise in places outside the partial lockdown which Dr Omane Boamah opposed to.
Dr Omane Boamah who is medical doctor argued that the Council of State member former does not appreciate the nuances of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the state of the country’s unpreparedness.
The EC suspended its suspended its planned compilation of a new voters’ register over the ban on public gatherings imposed on Ghanaians as part of measures to contain the spread of the novel COVID-19 which the government is struggled to address.
The exercise was initially scheduled for April 18, 2020, however the EC is yet to come out with a new date.
The EC says it wants to ensure that the voters’ register that will be used for the 2020 election is more credible and efficient than the existing one hence the need for a new Biometric Voter Management System (BVMS).
Currently, the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area, Tema, Kasoa and Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area are under lockdown in a bid to control the spread of the deadly disease.
The country has so recorded 636 COVID-19 cases with eight deaths in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Central, Eastern, Western, Volta, Northern, North East, Upper East, and Upper West regions.
