UWR: Critical shortage of medical supplies hits Dorimon Health Centre

Dorimon Health Centre in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region is in dire need of critical medical consumables.

The facility lacks medical consumables and equipment, and this has compelled management to liaise with some licensed over-the-counter medicine sellers to sell drugs to patients on a cash-and-carry basis, even when their NHIS cards are active.

The in-charge of the facility, Karim Darlo, expressed his frustration when he received some medical items from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) as part of its annual corporate social responsibility in the Upper West Region.

“On behalf of the over seventeen thousand people we are serving and the Wa West District Health Services Director, I say thank you for this gesture. What you have just done is going to touch the lives of many people; it’s going to heal a lot of souls.

When you came you realised that our problems are unlimited. When you entered our VIP ward, I heard you ask, ‘So this is your VIP ward?’ and I felt like changing my uniform at that time. The human resource itself is a problem but I know that is beyond your ability to help. In terms of the beds, these are just mattresses but the beds are not fit for purpose,” he explained.

The facility also needs serious renovation to prevent it from collapsing. Currently, beds at the facility for patients are in bad shape, with some broken and no longer usable for admitting patients.

The Physician Assistant, who doubles as the in-charge of the facility, Karim Darlo, appealed to authorities to consider expanding the facility to enable them to meet the demand of their catchment area. He said the health facility is a referral center for 11 CHPS compounds and serves over seventeen thousand people within 39 communities.

However, the facility is yet to see any expansion to accommodate the growing population. Mr. Darlo commended the GRA for their kind gesture and appealed to other benevolent organizations and philanthropists to come to their aid.

Chief Revenue Officer at the Wa Taxpayer Service Center, Patrick Somuah, presented five single bed mattresses, packets of face masks, a gallon of spirit, gauze bandages, and gauze rolls to management of the Dorimon Health Centre.

“As our social responsibility, we select a community or an activity within our catchment area, so this year we decided to do it outside Wa, so you are lucky we present this to you. It’s not enough but I know you could take good care of it so that later we will come back to see how the items are being put to use, so that we can donate again,” he stated.

The GRA also replaced leaky roofing sheets, plywood, broken louvre blades, and fixed three faulty ceiling fans as well as some mosquito nets.
