Ghana: Asiedu Nketia Beats Ofosu-Ampofo to Become NDC Chairman

Johnson Asiedu Nketia has beaten Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo to become the National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the party’s 10 national delegates congress held at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The 65-year-old politician secured 65.17% of the votes to eliminate Mr Ofosu- Ampofo who was tipped to retain the position. This is the outcome of the elections held on Saturday, December 17, 2022.

This is, however, not good news for the incumbent, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo who had vowed to emerge victor ahead of the congress.

Mr Ofosu Ampofo got 33.81% of the votes.

Popularly known as General Mosquito, Mr Asiedu Nketia relinquished his 17-year reign as the NDC’s General Secretary to run for the Chairmanship role.

About an hour to the end of the collation, Mr Ofosu Ampofo was spotted leaving the stadium in his vehicle.

Ahead of the polls, the General Secretary bade farewell to his members and urged all to forgive any transgressions that may have emanated from his office while serving as the chief scribe.

“Those I’ve offended, may the Lord touch your hearts to forgive me. The credit I have made so far is shared and attributed to the footsoldiers of this party,” the party firebrand said on Saturday.

The others in the chairmanship race also include Samuel Yaw Adusei and Nii Armah Ashietey.

They secured 0.61% and 0.44% votes respectively at the end of the polls.

Meanwhile, former Ketu South NDC MP Fifi Fiavi Kwetey will take over from Johnson Asiedu Nketia as General Secretary following a resounding victory at the party’s 10th National Delegates conference on Saturday.

Below is the list of winners 

Chairmanship

Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, former General Secretary of the party, won the chairmanship contest.

The 65-year-old politician polled 5,569 votes as against his closest contender, the incumbent National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo who polled 2,892.

Vice chairmanship position 

For this category, eight persons contested for three slots, however, at the end of the contest the three persons below got the positions.

Awudu Sofo Azourka, Dr Sherry Ayittey and Abanga Yakubu Alhassan were elected as first, second and third vice chairpersons respectively.

General Secretary 

Former Ketu South NDC MP, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, won the contest to take over from Johnson Asiedu Nketiah as General Secretary.

The former Propaganda Secretary contested with Peter Boamah Otukunor, who served as Mr Nketiah’s Deputy and Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, a former Sports Minister.

Deputy General Secretary 

There were seven aspirants for the two slots available for this position.

Barbara Serwaa Asamoah retained her position as Deputy General Secretary with Gbande Foyo Mustapha.

National Organiser

The former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Joseph Yamin, won the position.

Deputy National Organiser

Also, for this position, only two were needed out of the four contestants.

After the polls, Kobby Barlon and Elikem Kotoko were elected.

National Communications Officer 

Sammy Gyamfi has been retained as the Communication Officer position after he contested unopposed.

Deputy Communications Officer 

Malik Basintale and Ako Gunn were elected the deputy National Communication Officers.

Zongo Caucus Coordinator 

Five persons contested for this position, however, at the end of the contest, Mamah Mohammed Cole Younger won.

NEC members

This position saw the highest number of contestants. Nineteen persons contested for five slots.

Victor Wonder Kutor, Araba Tagoe, Cecillia N. Asaga, Victoria Kuma-Mintah and Ephraim Nii Tan Sackey were elected.
