Explainer: Zakat During the Cost of Living Crisis

Muslim Aid

Zakat is a fundamental pillar of Islam and is an obligatory payment that Muslims pay every year to Zakat as a pledge to protect the most vulnerable people in society. It’s not considered charity, rather a duty.

With the cost of living crisis, more people in the UK can receive Zakat payments as relief from financial hardships. Muslim Aid has historically worked in the UK to provide relief from hunger, poverty and during national emergencies.

Muslim Aid is one of the very few charities with an end-to-end Zakat guide. This means Muslims who pay Zakat to Muslim Aid know precisely what we are doing with their payments from when people make the payment to even after it has been distributed with our strict auditing process.

As the second-oldest British Muslim charity, Muslim Aid aims to lead by example with transparency, so our Zakat policy is reviewed and ratified annually by the Muslim scholars of the Islamic Council of Europe (ICE). We ensure donors have peace of mind that Zakat payments are in safe hands and Shariah-compliant.

Zakat can be paid throughout the year, but it is often paid during Ramadan because Muslims believe it to be a more blessed time to donate to charity and pay obligatory religious taxes.
