Commonwealth Sport Coordination Commission for Glasgow 2026 commends progress

The Commonwealth Sport Coordination Commission (CoCom) for Glasgow 2026 has applauded the strong progress and collaborative approach of the Organising Company, following a two-day visit to the city, concluding that it is on track to deliver a ground-breaking, action-packed Games.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, the biggest sporting event in the UK next year, will take place from 23 July to 2 August, bringing together 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories to compete across 10 sports and six Para sports, with more than 200 medals to be won across 50 sessions of sport.

The CoCom is responsible for delivery oversight and ensuring the Commonwealth Games are delivered in line with scope, schedule and budget. Over the two-day visit, the CoCom reviewed preparations and guided a wide range of areas, including operational delivery, partner integration, Games services, venue readiness and sustainability initiatives.

The CoCom also visited the world-class facilities set to host the Games next year at Tollcross International Swimming Centre, the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and Arena, the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) and Scotstoun Stadium, as well as meeting with delivery partners and stakeholders.

With less than a year to go until the Opening Ceremony, the visit is another key milestone for the Organising Company, which is on track to deliver an altogether brilliant Games on time and on budget.

Dr. Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, said: “Glasgow 2026 will be a bridge to the Commonwealth Games of the future, with a bold, refreshed model that prioritises flexibility, sustainability and inclusivity. It is also establishing a dynamic and robust platform for future editions of the Games, which have attracted unprecedented interest from prospective hosts.

“Glasgow is ready to host and preparations are progressing at pace. What we’ve seen over the series of meetings is innovation at its very best, driven by a team of committed, hugely experienced and visionary individuals.

Their ambition and brave decision-making are truly impressive, and we are confident Glasgow 2026 will be a ground-breaking, action-packed Games that inspires, entertains and connects communities across the Commonwealth and beyond.

“We extend our sincere thanks to the Organising Company and Commonwealth Games Scotland for their dedication and hard work, and to Glasgow City Council, the Scottish Government and the UK Government for their support.”

Chris Chan, CoCom Chair, Commonwealth Sport, added: “The Coordination Commission is delighted with the updates received during our time in Glasgow. The Organising Company has demonstrated a clear focus on developing an innovative model that will deliver an unforgettable Games for the city, Scotland and the wider Commonwealth. We were particularly impressed by the collaborative spirit and emphasis on community engagement and environmental responsibility.”

Phil Batty OBE, CEO, Glasgow 2026, added: “The world of international events is changing with a greater emphasis from host cities and nations on identifying sustainable and high impact formats of multi-sport competition. The Glasgow 2026 revitalised event delivery model brings together Glasgow’s global reputation as a major event powerhouse with industry experts, iconic venues and strong partnerships to deliver a brilliant Glasgow 2026 at pace and scale.

“The Organising Company continues to hit major milestones that would traditionally take years to plan in just a matter of months and it’s a testament to the talented team that the Commonwealth Sport Coordination Commission has provided positive assurance of our progress and delivery to date.
