Accra, Ghana, September 1, 2019//-The Center for Ethical Governance CEG (GH) has warned the authorities of the Nalerigu Nursing & Midwifery College not to abuse the human and political rights of the students of the school.
This follows the attempt by the school’s authorities to sanction student nurses who genuinely expressed their displeasure about gross mismanagement, corruption, among others in the Akufo-Addo-led government.
The management of the college ostensibly reacted angrily to the open and genuine concerns expressed by the students against the Akufo-Addo government’s gross mismanagement, daily corruption, nepotism and insensitivity in the country.
In the video that has gone viral on social media, these student nurses were seen wailing and apologising to the former President John Dramani Mahama for voting against him in the 2016 general elections.
The CEG (GH) in a press release issued by its Executive Director, Prof. Kwame Ohene-Adjei notified the management of the college that under no circumstances will they be allowed to intimidate these student nurses and violate their constitutional rights.
The management of the Nalerigu Nursing & Midwifery College is hereby reminded that, there are no two types of rights for students in Nursing and Midwifery training institutions in Ghana, it added.
The CEG GH questioned: “Where was the Management of the College when other nurses openly demonstrated in favour of President Akufo-Addo?”
To this end, the CEG (GH) called on the Management of this College to immediately withdraw the shameful and sycophantic Press Release since they have no right over the free conscience and freedom of expression of the nurses.
The Management of the Nalerigu Nursing & Midwifery College is hereby advised against taking any unscrupulous disciplinary action against the affected students since, any such action will be a complete violation of Article 21 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the release said.
“Managers of public institutions, who clandestinely do open politics and bidding of politicians are hereby reminded of their professional and ethical responsibilities to be fair, balanced and non political in the exercise of their duties.
The allusion in the press release that the students have benefited fully from the Nursing Training Allowances, is of no administrative value, but naked politics, since those alleged payment of allowances were from the tax payer”, it stated.
The CEG-GH stands in solidarity with all the students who thronged the palace of the Overlord of Mamprugu to welcome the former President to the North East Region, according to the release.
“The CEG-GH will take every legal and constitutional steps to protect the interests and rights of the affected students from any unprincipled and unethical steps by the school”.
