President Akufo-Addo and Emir of Qatar when he visited Ghana

Accra, Ghana, November 12, 2018//-It appears that Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is unperturbed about the killing of pedestrians on the Madina-Adenta highway footbridges which claimed about 200 lives since the beginning of the year.

At time of going to the press, residents of Adenta were embarked on a peaceful protest to press upon the government to fix the footbridges. While Mr Akufo-Addo has left the country at the invitation of Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

According to press release issued on Monday 12, November 2018 announcing his visit to Qatar, it said Mr Akufo-Addo, left Ghana on Monday, 12 November, 2018, for a day’s official visit to Qatar, at the invitation of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who paid, at the invitation of President Akufo-Addo, an official visit to Ghana on 24th December, 2017.

The reciprocal visit is aimed at deepening and strengthening the ties that exist between the two countries, as well as exploring other areas of co-operation for their mutual benefit.

The President was accompanied by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, MP, and officials of the Presidency and Foreign Ministry.

President Akufo-Addo will return to Ghana on Tuesday, 13 November, 2018, and in his absence, the Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, shall, in accordance with Article 60(8) of the Constitution, act in his stead, the press release indicated.

Ghana boils

But back home in Ghana, some Ghanaians have expressed anger at Mr Akufo-Addo’s recent comment on the killer footbridges.

He exonerated his government from the blame and rather blamed it on the previous Mahama-led administration.

Mr Akufo-Addo said that issues which led to the protest at Adenta are “legacies of a decade” of infrastructural neglect, suggesting he is not to blame.

The President in expressing his condolences to the family of the student who lost her life at Adenta said:

“The Ministry of Roads and Highways is ensuring that work begins on completion of these bridges in the course of the coming week, and has put together a comprehensive plan to address systematically all these infrastructural problems, which are legacies of a past decade of neglect.”

The President and his 110, now 111 ministers, particularly NPP MPs at Adenta and Madina have received wide flak over the numerous deaths recorded on the highway.

So far, almost 200 Ghanaians, including children and students, old men and old ladies have since the beginning of this year been killed on the multiple highway with a speed limit of 100 kilometer per hour.

However some Ghanaians used unprinted words on the President on his own Facebook page.

Below are some of the comments

“Fix the roads and spare us these condolences. Reality now dawn on you. There is money in Ghana Mr super incompetent.”

“Legacies of the past decade of neglect” indeed! I am highly disappointed in the NPP. Always blaming past government but never accepts their incompetence.”

“You talk too much but do nothing…it seems like you sleeping on the job… Have u now seen the importance of infastructure and its expansion… Governance is a serious business… You are power drunk if not u should be resigning for every preventable lives being lost as a result of your incompetence!”

“Someone has just loss her precious daughter and it all fall on “legacies of past decade”? What a waste. This is really a disappointment.”

“What do you mean by legacies of a past decade of neglect? Why did Ghanaians voted for you? You and your government can’t just talk without blaming someone else right? Fix it because that why Ghanaians voted for you”
