Berlin, January 31, 2025 – Germany has officially expressed its support for the candidacy of Professor Khaled El-Enany for the Post of Director-General of UNESCO.

This announcement was made during Khaled El-Enany’s visit to Germany, where he met several intellectuals and high-level officials, including Ms. Katja Keul, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany.

During this meeting, the Minister of State and Professor Khaled El-Enany shared their common vision of a more resilient, ambitious UNESCO, committed to implementing major projects to address global challenges. Education for all, the preservation of cultural heritage, science and innovation, and press freedom were at the heart of their discussions.

“In the face of current crises, UNESCO must be a force for stability and innovation, capable of taking concrete action for the benefit of people. Germany, with its historical commitment to culture and education, shares this vision of a bold organization grounded in the reality of 21st-century challenges. I sincerely thank Germany for its strong support and confidence in my candidacy,” stated Khaled El-Enany.

Germany’s support further strengthens the international momentum behind Professor Khaled El-Enany, who already enjoys the public support of the African Union, the League of Arab States, France, Brazil, Spain, and Türkiye. This coalition of allies reflects a shared commitment to transforming UNESCO into a more inclusive, efficient institution fully dedicated to intercultural dialogue and international cooperation.

Furthermore, Gabon recently announced the withdrawal of its candidacy and called on the countries that had supported it to rally behind Khaled El-Enany’s candidacy, further consolidating the diplomatic momentum in favour of his vision for UNESCO.
