Kenya’s agriculture commodities registered a decline in value this week as the prices of both tea and coffee dipped at their respective auctions.
The price of tea dropped to Sh207 from Sh216 per kilo last week to end the rally that had been witnessed in the last three sales at the Mombasa Auction.
The price of the beverage had nearly touched the two-dollar mark last week, with this week’s drop attributed to high volumes of the commodity in the market.
According to East African Tea Traders, the quantities of tea offered for sale this week rose by two million kilos when compared with the previous trading.
At the same time, coffee prices declined to Sh33,880 from Sh34,650 in the previous sale as the quantity of premium grade bean at the exchange continues to decline.
This marked the second time that the value of the coffee has taken a downward trend since the beginning of the crop year in October 2020.
The prices had been boosted by a new crop coming in from central Kenya, high demand for the commodity ahead of Christmas and higher international prices towards the end of last year.
