John Mahama: Persons With Disabilities Want Equal Opportunities and Not Our Sympathy

Former President John Dramani Mahama speaking at the launch at Ningo

Accra, Ghana, July 14, 2019//-Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to give equal opportunities to people with disabilities instead of sympathy.

According to him, persons with disabilities do not need sympathy of the society but rather want equal opportunities to enable them contribute their quota to the socio-economic development of the country.

Mr Mahama who is the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), said this at the launch of   the CEM Ability Village at Ningo in the Greater Accra Region.

He said such persons want to be recognised and urged the society to end all forms of discrimination against them.

Mr Mahama cited software engineer Farida Bedwei, who has proven that given the opportunity, PwDs can even do better than many with no disability.

He lamented that Ghana has many legislations intended to help protect and improve the lives of PwDs but enforcement has not been effective.

Mr Mahama has therefore promised to focus his attention on persons with disabilities if he wins the 2020 presidential election.

The former President joined  Rev. Steve Mensah and his Charismatic Evangelistic Ministry today to launch the Charity project.

The proposed 2,000 acre CEM Ability Village will be a purpose-built community for PwDs in Ningo, where PwDs will enjoy full and equal rights, be included and play active roles in society.

The newly launched charity project also focuses on the empowerment of persons with disabilities (PWDs) to live more dignified lives in the society.
