
Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Ghana, June 29, 2019//-Dr George Oduro, a Senior Medical Officer at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), has cautioned about the growing menace of alcohol abuse in the Ghanaian society which needs to be addressed before something untoward happens.
According to him in Ghana, “We have a large number of so-called herbal bitters being used by some people because they feel it enhances their sexual performance but the truth is that it actually inhibits anything which involves the nerves and the brain”.
Demystifying universally acknowledge assertion about alcohol, which the beverage industry players across the globe have been riding on to sell their wares, Dr. George Oduro , Consultant in Accident and Emergency Medicine made it clear that: “Alcohol does not really make you better; it reduces your capacity.
Admittedly he said, “For thousands of years, ever since man discovered alcohol, it has been used as ‘social lubricant’ ,whereby it enables people to share joy on certain occasion and so on ,and there is nothing wrong with that if it is used in a rational and sensible way”.
According to him, figures from the World Health Organisation (WHO) suggest that about six million people die from injuries every year because they have taken some alcohol on the road.

He explained that, “Too much alcohol can affect the heart to become inflamed, too much alcohol can lead to muscle wasting and alcohol affects the pancreas, which produces insulin thereby guarding us against diabetes”.
