Accra, Ghana//-The Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) says it is addressing complaints received within the first seven days of implementing the new automated traffic enforcement system, including concerns over trade licence plates, untransferred vehicle ownership and data discrepancies.

The Director of Education, Research and Training at the MTTD, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alexander Kwaku Obeng, said authorities were handling all the complaints submitted so far.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, November 7, he identified the misuse of trade licence plates as one of the major issues emerging from the enforcement exercise.

He explained that the law allows registered vehicle dealers to acquire trade licence plates from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) for trading purposes, including renting them out for a fee.

However, he cautioned that dealers who rent out their plates remain responsible for any traffic violations recorded against vehicles using them, as tickets are issued to the registered holders rather than the individuals renting the plates.

He said the practice had been abused for a long time and needed to be addressed to ensure accountability under the new system.

ACP Obeng also identified the failure of vehicle owners to transfer ownership after selling their vehicles as another source of complaints, alongside some data-related issues that authorities were working to resolve.

On concerns about the reliability of the automated enforcement system, he said the equipment had undergone the necessary technical checks and verification.

He explained that the system was homologated and that the equipment used had been verified by the government’s engineer.

He assured motorists that the exercise was not intended to unfairly penalise or incriminate Ghanaians, stressing that the authorities were committed to ensuring the integrity of the equipment and enforcement process.
