John Boadu, National Chairman of NPP

John Boadu has been elected National Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the party’s National Delegates Conference in Kumasi.

The 56-year-old former NPP General Secretary emerged as the winner of the highly contested chairmanship election held on Saturday, October 3, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Mr Boadu, who polled 2888 votes, emerged victorious ahead of former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, with 2048 votes, and former National Chairman Paul Afoko, who polled 490 votes.

As the results were announced, supporters of Mr Boadu were seen celebrating at the congress grounds, expressing excitement over his victory.

Mr Boadu was one of four candidates who contested the position, alongside former National Chairman Paul Afoko, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko and former Greater Accra Regional Chairman Sammy Crabbe.

His election comes after a last-minute alliance with Mr Crabbe, who announced on Saturday that he was joining forces with Mr Boadu and urged his supporters to vote for him.

The chairmanship contest formed part of elections to select nine national officers of the NPP, with more than 7,000 delegates participating in the conference.

The elections followed the consideration and approval of proposed amendments to the party’s constitution, including changes to the position of party leader while the NPP is in opposition.

Mr Boadu, who served as the party’s General Secretary from 2018 to 2022, is expected to play a key role in the NPP’s reorganisation and efforts to rebuild its structures ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Other Executives elected

Justin Frimpong Kodua retained the position of General Secretary after securing 4,486 votes.

Daniel Titus Glover was elected National Organiser with 2,964 votes, while Alfred Kwajo Thompson was elected National Treasurer with 2,243 votes.

Three National Vice Chairpersons were also elected from a field of 13 candidates.

Kojo Fosu was elected First Vice Chairman, Henry Nana Boakye was elected Second Vice Chairman, and Nana Akomea was elected Third Vice Chairman.

Dennis Edward Miracles Aboagye was elected National Communications Director unopposed.

In the special wing positions, Abanga Yakubu Fuseni emerged as National Youth Organiser, while Hawa Koomson was elected National Women’s Organiser.

Mohammed Ali Suraj won the National Nasara Organiser position.

He secured 372 votes, compared with Salim Mansuru Bamba’s 311 and Awal Mohammed’s 106.

The election has produced a new national executive line-up tasked with leading the NPP’s organisational and political affairs following the delegates conference.

The results mark the emergence of Mr Boadu as National Chairman alongside Mr Kodua, who defeated him for the General Secretary position at the party’s 2022 national delegates conference.

The new leadership is expected to assume responsibility for the party’s national administration and organisation.
