Ghana Welcomes First Batch of Ghanaians Fleeing Xenophobic Unrest in South Africa

Accra, Ghana//-The first batch of Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa touched down safely in Accra on Wednesday, as the government launched a coordinated effort to bring citizens home amid rising xenophobic tensions.

Senior officials met the returnees at the airport. The delegation included the Chief of Staff and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, who were on the ground to receive them directly.

The operation was run through Ghana’s diplomatic mission in South Africa, working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It followed weeks of escalating reports of intimidation, attacks, and hostility targeting foreign nationals in several areas.

Many of the evacuees left after facing harassment, threats, and property damage in neighbourhoods where tensions had spiked. For some, the decision to leave came after fear made daily life untenable.

This flight marks the start of a wider government plan to evacuate Ghanaians caught in the unrest. Officials say they are monitoring the situation and preparing to assist more citizens who want to return.
