A total of 5,585 fire outbreaks were recorded between January and November 2025. These include residential and non-residential fires, which involve fire outbreaks at the markets.
Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong, Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) disclosed this in an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues, Sunday, January 11, 2026.
“From January to November, we have recorded 5,585 fires, both residential and non-residential fires, including market fires,” she stated.
The figure represents a slight decrease compared to the number recorded within the same period in 2024. 5,596 fire outbreaks were recorded between January and November 2024.
Speaking about the contributing factors for the rate at which fire outbreaks are recorded in the country, Daniella Ntow Sarpong noted that the negligence of citizens is a major concern.
“I will say it is negligence on the part of the citizenry because there are preventable things. We don’t wait for it to occur before we try to manage it so the negligence is too much on the path of the citizenry,” she added.
“You advise them they don’t take it. You go to the market, and they are using cylinders all over, and the market managers are not also helping,” she stressed.
She appealed for Ghanaians to be safety cautious and always be on the watchout for things that could lead to fire outbreak.
Madam Ntow Sarpong cautioned that the the GNFS will from this year, begin to crack the whip on persons who don’t seek inspection and certification of properties from the Service. 3news
