Accra, Ghana – MUYAD Social Services has petitioned the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, calling on him to reconsider his position on the Wesley Girls SHS religious discrimination court case.
In a statement issued on November 25, 2025, the Executive Council of MUYAD Social Services expressed concern over the Attorney General’s argument that Wesley Girls SHS has the right to practice its Methodist Christian faith and prevent other religious practices.
The organisation believes that the Attorney General’s stance could undermine the principles of equality and freedom of religion enshrined in Ghana’s constitution. MUYAD Social Services is urging the Attorney General to prioritise dialogue, inclusivity, and respect for diverse beliefs, ensuring that everyone can practice their faith freely without infringing on others’ rights.
“We believe that, as a democrat, you should be championing social cohesion where every individual has the right to freedom of religion and practice their faith without restriction or coercion,” the statement read.
The petition also highlighted the potential consequences of restricting religious practices, warning that it could lead to a polarised society.
MUYAD Social Services is calling for an out-of-court settlement and a swift retraction of the Attorney General’s stance, emphasising the need to protect national interest and cohesion.
The petition has been copied to the Office of the President, the Chief Justice, the National Democratic Congress, the National Chief Imam, and the National Peace Council, among others.

MUYAD SOCIAL SERVICES PETITION ATTORNEY GENERAL ON WESLEY GIRLS COURT CASE POSITION ON RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION
November 25, 2025.
The Attorney General and Minister of Justice,
Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Office
Accra – Ghana.
Dear Sir,
Petition: MUYAD Social Services Calls On The Attorney General To Reconsider Its Position On The Wesley Girls SHS Religious Discrimination Court Case.
The Executive Council of MUYAD Social Services expresses concern over the Attorney General’s argument that Wesley Girls SHS has the right to practice its Methodist Christian faith and prevent other religious practices.
We believe that, as a democrat and someone who subscribes to the tenets and principles of democracy, you should be championing the social cohesion where every individual has the right to freedom of religion and practice their faith without restriction or coercion.
In a diverse and pluralistic society like Ghana, promoting religious tolerance and inclusivity is essential. As you are well aware, the principles of democracy and freedom of worship are closely intertwined.
In a democratic society, the freedom to practice one’s faith is a fundamental human right. This right is enshrined in Ghana’s constitution and international human rights instruments, as well as the core foundation of your political party, the National Democratic Congress.
Democracy thrives when individuals can express their beliefs without fear of persecution or restriction. Respect for human rights, including freedom of worship, is a cornerstone of democratic governance. When we respect each other’s right to practice their faith, we promote tolerance, understanding, and peaceful coexistence.
In the context of Wesley Girls’ SHS, the issue raises questions about balancing the school’s religious traditions with the rights of students and staff of other faiths. A democratic approach would prioritise dialogue, inclusivity, and respect for diverse beliefs, ensuring that everyone can practice their faith freely without infringing on others’ rights.
As Attorney General, you must not forget that there are also Islamic faith SHSs in the where many students of different faiths are schooling; per your stance on the Wesley Girls SHS case, the Islamic SHSs also begin to apply the same principles. What do you think we will be promoting as a government or a country? A polarised society, right?
We urge the Attorney General to consider the implications of this stance on the rights of students and staff of other faiths at Wesley Girls’ SHS. Restricting religious practices could undermine the principles of equality and freedom of religion enshrined in Ghana’s constitution.
MUYAD Social Services calls on parties to resort to a balanced approach that respects the school’s traditions while ensuring that all students and staff can practice their faith freely. We call for dialogue and understanding among all parties to promote harmony and respect for diverse religious beliefs.
We call for your swift retraction and approach to the case in question. We believe of court settlement will be helpful at this stage while protecting the national interest and cohesion. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Signed………………
