November 8, 2017//- The Energy Watch Group and Lappeenranta University of Technology launched their new groundbreaking study, which models a global transition to 100% renewable electricity.

Its results show: 100% renewable electricity worldwide is feasible at every hour throughout the year and is more cost-effective than the current system, based largely on fossil fuel and nuclear energy.

The first of its kind modeling simulates the most efficient energy supply with an optimal mix of technologies and locally available renewable resources on hourly resolution for an entire reference year.

Scenarios are presented in 5-year intervals from 2015 until 2050. The results are aggregated into nine major regions of the world: Europe, Eurasia,  Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, North America and South America.

Prof. Dr. Christian Breyer, Lead Author of the study, Professor for Solar Economy at Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finland;  Hans-Josef Fell, President of the Energy Watch Group, German Member of the Parliament 1998-2013, Co-author of the German Renewable Energy Sources Act; among other distinguished panelists will discuss the results of the study and its implications for the global efforts to combat climate change and the global energy policy-making in Bonn, Germany at the ongoing COP23 conference.

Instructively, Energy Watch Group (EWG) is an independent, non-profit global network of scientists and parliamentarians. The EWG commissions research and independent studies and analyses on global energy developments.
