At a ceremony held at the Heroes’ Park in Kumasi on Friday, Mr Agyemang, 50, was given a cheque for $100,000 as reward for his prize. He beat competition from two women – Mabel Akoto Cudjoe and Rebecca Commey – to emerge the winner.

Madam Akoto Cudjoe from Hohoe in the Volta Region was the first runner-up while Madam Commey from Ga South in the Greater Accra Region emerged the second-runner-up.

It was the 33rd Farmers’ Day celebration themed: ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’. Speaking at the ceremony, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said: “Agriculture will remain a priority of government”. He said his government is committed to its resolve to “operationalise a comprehensive plan to provide food security” with the Planting for Food and Jobs as one of the measures.

The other is ‘One Village, One Dam’ for the north. President Akufo-Addo said so far 64 districts in the north have been earmarked to soon witness an implementation of the ‘One-Village, One-Dam’ programme. He added that 51 dams in the Volta, Greater Accra and Central regions have been selected for rehabilitation under the same programme.

The 2017 National Best Farmer was grateful to the president and the Minister of Agriculture for the policies. “God bless you for your policies,” he said in Twi. This year’s event also saw special awards given to cocoa farmers.
