Uber: Ghana Didn’t Ask Us to Brand Our Vehicles

Accra, Ghana, January 15, 2018//- Uber Technologies Inc,  a global transportation network company  operating in 606 cities worldwide, debunked reports that Ghana has given it  one month ultimatum to brand its driver-partner vehicles into taxi cabs or face its wrath.

 “We would like to clarify that no such decision has been made by the Ministry of Transport or any of its officials, Uber’s General Manager, West Africa; Lola Kassim said in a short statement.

“Uber is committed to continually providing the great people of Ghana a safe, reliable and flexible solution to urban transport at the tap of a button. We’re proud to be bringing more choice to Ghana – and providing economic opportunities for riders and driver partners alike”, she added.

“We attended a stakeholder meeting convened by the Ministry of Transport of Ghana on January 10, 2018, where we further highlighted our commitment in continuing to work with relevant regulatory and government agencies”.

Ms Kassim continued: “We also reiterated the fact that our technology is open and non-exclusive and we will continue to offer it to transportation service providers including taxi operators  who would like to take advantage of the economic opportunities it can provide.

While no conclusions have been reached, we will continue these conversations towards outcomes that benefit all stakeholders in the transportation ecosystem”.

“We will meet again next month with officials of the Ministry of Transport of Ghana to further update stakeholders on the outcomes of our policy outreach.”

In September 2017, Accra, September 29, 2017//-Uber celebrated its four years operations on the African continent, and with more than 1.8 million active riders using the Uber app.
The company launched its Africa operations in Johannesburg, South Africa in September 2013 and has since been operating in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, among others.

In Ghana, Uber is operating in two cities namely-Accra and Kumasi, while plans are underway to extend its reach to other cities in the country.
