New Leadership of Ghana’s Parliament Announced

 

Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye

A distinguished lawyer and historian, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye has been announced as the new Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament following the emergence of a veteran politician Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the winner of the December 2016 general elections.

Mr Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) beat President John Dramani Mahama of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the election.

The new Speaker is supported by Joseph Osei Owusu, and Alban Bagbin as the First Deputy Speaker, and Second Deputy Speaker respectively.

The rest are Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu-Majority Speaker,  Madam Sarah Adwoa Safo-Deputy Majority Leader, Kwasi Ameyaw Cheremeh-Majority Whip, Haruna Iddrisu-Minority Leader,  James Klutse Avedzi-Deputy Minority Leader,  and Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka- Minority Chief Whip.

While, Ahmed Ibrahim, and Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah are the two deputy minority chief whips respectively.

The new leaders are going to steer the affairs of the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic to be constituted on January 6, 2017, ahead of the official swearing-in of President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo, on Saturday, January 7.
