Gyan bags AFC Champions League Top Scorer Award

BLACK Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan was named top scorer in the just-ended Asian Champions League competition after putting away 12 goals in his team, Al-Ain’s, run to the semi-finals.

Gyan scored from the group stages up to the quarter finals but his goals could not get Al-Ain in to the final as they were beaten 4-2 by Saudi Arabian side, Al-Hilal, in a two-legged semi-final.

Gyan’s 12 goals were scored against Lekhyiwa, Al-Ittihad and Tractor Sazi in the group stages (7 goals), Al-Jazira in the Round of 16 (3 goals) and Al-Ittihad (2 goals) in the quarter finals.

The former Sunderland man topped the scorer’s chart with two more goals ahead of  Nasser Al-Shamrani (of Al-Hilal) and a massive six ahead of Elkeson (0f Guangzhou Evergrande, China), Mokhtar Fallatah (of Al-Ittihad, Saudi Arabia), and Luciano (of Foolad, Iran).

Australia’s Ante Covic of the competition-winning Western Sydney Wanderers was named the Asian Champions League’s Most Valuable Player.

Wanderers will represent Asia in the FIFA Club World Cup later this year in Morocco.
