You can’t help but feel proud about Botswana. One of the most exciting things I noticed while we were in Gaborone is that they speak Setswana in Parliament, alongside English.
Ghana, Nigeria, and others—still bound by colonial influences—must eventually have a mature conversation about their national identity.
We can learn from South Africa, where 11 languages are recognised as national languages and can be used officially. This strengthens unity and fosters true national cohesion.
It’s time we stop laughing at fellow Africans who can’t speak the coloniser’s language. The question we must ask is: What kind of future do we want? One that celebrates our rich cultural heritage, or one trapped in colonial imitation?
Imagine a Ghana where every citizen speaks Dagbani, Ewe, Ga, Gruni, Nzema, Twi, and more — a nation where our diversity is a source of pride.
I believe in Africa.
