Accra, Ghana, November 26, 2019//- Women, men and teenagers in rural Ghana are risking their lives to register for the Ghana Card in the ongoing mass registration exercise conducted by the National Identification Authority (NIA).

Pictures emerged from Yeji, the capital of Pru District of the newly created Bono Region of Ghana and adjacent to Lake Volta saw people from upstream and downstream queuing day-in-day-out for the registration for the card without success.

“They can’t risk their lives in perilous journey across the Lake Volta and not get their cards”, according to members of the community.

The mass registration for the card started in April 2019 with the NIA targeting Ghanaians 15 years and above.

The Ghana Card is a national identity card that is issued by the Ghanaian authorities to Ghanaian citizens – both resident and non-resident, and legally and permanently resident foreign nationals. It is proof of identity, citizenship and residence of the holder. The current version is in ID1 format and biometric.
