BECE Candidates taking exams

Accra, Ghana, August 25, 2018//-The West African Examination Council is withholding the results of 2,061 candidates of this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) over suspicions of examination malpractices.

According to the council, it is investigating the alleged malpractices after which a determination would be made on either to release or cancel those results, a statement by the Council announcing the release of the BECE results said.

“The withheld results will either be released or cancelled as soon as the Council concludes its investigations,” WAEC said but did not state when the investigations is likely to be over.

Already, the results of 134 candidates who took foreign materials into the examination call, colluded and engaged in irregular act ivies during the exams have had their subject results cancelled.

In July this year, the results of 26,434 candidates who sat for the 2018 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have were withheld over various cases of examination malpractices.

The alleged malpractices, WAEC noted, were “detected during and after” the conduct of the examination which was written by 316,999 SHS students across the country.

It said investigations would determine whether to cancel the results. It has yet issued any statement on the progress of the said investigations, which has been over a month now.

Meanwhile figures from WAEC showed a total 509,827 candidates sat for the BECE exams. The figure, it said, is 8.92 per cent higher than the previous year.

WAEC says the BECE candidates can use its online platform to check for their provisional results.
