UBA Ghana Launches Fifth Edition of National Essay Competition for SHS Students 

Accra, Ghana, October 12, 2018//-The United Bank for Africa (UBA) Ghana has launched the fifth edition of its National Essay Competition aimed at funding Senior High School (SHS) students in any University in Africa.

The launch which, took place at the company’s head office in Accra witnessed the Regional Chief Executive Officer of UBA, Mrs. Abiola Bawuah, the Director General of Ghana Educational Service (Secondary Education), Augustus Agemfo, the head of Partnership and Program of the Ghana Library Authority, Sampson Osenda, Senior staffs of UBA and people from various media organisations in the country.

The national essay competition which was launched in 2014 in Ghana, has provided a competitive platform to develop the intellectual and writing abilities of SHS students in Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal as well as granting winners fully paid scholarship into any University in Africa.

The competition in Ghana has so far produced 12 winners currently studying in various universities.

The fifth edition promises to be more intriguing as it’s expected to witness an increase in the number of participants after seeing 1,800 in the last edition.

Participants will battle it out in an essay writing competition on the captivating topic “Law enforcement a responsibility for all” unveiled at the launch.

The first prize winner is expected to walk home with a whopping 5,000 dollars for tuition fees while the second and third gets 3,500 dollars and 2,000 dollars respectively.

The Regional Chief Executive Officer of UBA and founder of Abiola Foundations, Mrs. Abiola Bawuah advocated that the initiative is a good step which needs to be supported by the Ministry of Education to reach all schools.

She further noted that education is the way adding that stakeholders must do their possible best to increase the number of participants this year.

“I believe we’ve taken a good decision and I’m excited by the results that we are having. By the end of the year we will have 15 students in the University. Some of them will be coming out next year and there’s nothing greater than that.”

The Director General of Ghana Educational Service, Secondary Education,  Augustus Agyemfra pledged his immense support to increase the number of participants in this year’s edition.

For entry, applicants are to send in handwritten essay of not more than 750 words on the selected topic to UBA Foundation, United Bank for Africa (Ghana) Limited at Heritage Tower, off Liberia Road Ridge, PMB 29 Ministries – Accra or deliver essay application to any UBA branch closer to the applicant(s).
