U.S Department Issues Dishwasher Classification That Won’t Save Water or Energy

Washington DC, U.S, October 24, 2020// – The U.S. Department of Energy has needlessly established a new class of residential dishwashers that would not be subject to any water or energy efficiency standards, undermining three decades of energy efficiency progress for consumers and the environment.

The action exempts dishwashers that wash and dry dishes in one-hour or less from efficiency standards, a proposal that has been opposed by environmental groups and manufacturers as most dishwashers on the market already offer quick cycles.

Following is a statement from Joe Vukovich, energy efficiency advocate at NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council): “Wasting energy and water doesn’t help anyone.

What’s even more outrageous is that the Department of Energy took this action in spite of the fact that dishwasher manufacturers opposed it and explained to DOE why it was harmful and unnecessary.

“Today’s dishwashers do a great job cleaning dishes, and they already have optional quick cycles for when consumers want to clean their dishes as quickly as possible.

U.S. consumers lose when DOE spends its time with needless, harmful actions like this instead of complying with its numerous missed legal deadlines.”
