Trade Mission to Kenya and Tanzania Yields Significant Results

Pretoria, South Africa, May 28, 2018// — A week-long Trade and Investment Mission to Kenya and Tanzania organised by Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) has yielded good leads for two South African companies and given others a chance to meet with potential investors and partners in the East African markets.
The Head of Business Development for the East African Region at Tractionel Enterprise, Mr Mawethu Ngubo said as specialists in electrical infrastructure on railways and substation, they have managed to put together an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) initiative in Kenya which will open a lot of doors for the company.

“The same thing happened in Tanzania with companies who are locally-based and already have a strong footprint in the market. In terms of selling the service, we are currently negotiating with the companies to be part of the sub-contractors for the overhead track electrification,” said Ngubo.

Ngubo also said in terms of monetary value of the project the company still has to work it out as it depends on the number of kilometres of track they will be constructing.

“The mission was extremely beneficial to the company in that we have unsuccessfully attempted trips to Kenya and Tanzania. To be honest it was quiet difficult for us to even confirm meetings with anyone operating in the same space as us in these markets before we could link up with the dti and our agents,” he added.

The Managing Director of Nxco Mining Technologies Mr Michael Durie said as most of his clients are mainly state utilities and government departments, he managed to get a local distributor in Tanzania who will be a link for him and serve all his clients.

He said as a company they always strive to provide safer ways of mining and breaking rock in African mines, and this might be a good opportunity to introduce his products into this market.

Over the past week, the business delegation had an opportunity to visit and hear first-hand on the SA Inc. LAPSSET Corridor Programme, which is the East Africa’s largest and most ambitious infrastructure project, linking South Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya with new rail, road and oil pipeline links across the region.
Other sites that were visited were the Export Processing Zone and Tanzania Investment Centre. Presentations on investment opportunities available in the Export Processing Zone and Tanzania Investment Centre were made followed by site visits to an agro-processing and electronic cards company in the zone.
