MTN Ghana Staff Train Youth in Deprived Urban Communities

Accra, Ghana, June 22, 2018// –MTN Ghana staff in partnership with National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI) has organized skills training workshops for 100 needy youth in Tamale, Kumasi, Takoradi and Accra, as part of  the 12th edition of its 21 Days of Y’ello Care staff volunteer programme.

The beneficiaries selected from deprived communities, were trained in soap/bleach making, bead making, batik production and leather works. Staff volunteers also trained participants in basic book-keeping techniques.

The initiative was organized with the sole aim of empowering young people with skills that will ignite them to start their own businesses.

15 computers for ATCC

In line with its youth empowerment objective, MTN staff volunteers donated and installed 15 computers for Accra Technical Training Center (ATCC).

In an activity dubbed Zongo Coders, the volunteers partnered with Youth for Development (IYD) to train 100 Zongo youth in general ICT and coding. The participants were selected from Nima, Maamobi and Accra New Town.

Commenting on the exercise, the Acting Corporate Services Executive of MTN Ghana, Mr. Samuel Koranteng said: “It is our hope that through these initiative we will help empower the youth in deprived areas with skills that will enable them to positively impact their communities and also help keep them off the streets”.

Additional projects

Operating under the theme- Creating a Brighter Future’, MTN Ghana employees will also embark on additional projects in line with youth empowerment initiatives and activities to promote good sanitation in selected communities across Ghana before the end of 21 days.

Cleanup campaigns were also embarked on across the country in partnership with Zoomlion, a leading waste management company.

The volunteers also visited  Nelplast Ghana Limited, a Ghanaian Company which recycles plastic waste, to recycle waste plastic bottles which were harvested by MTN staff at James Town beach. The plastic waste were recycled into building and pavement blocks.

Instructively, the 21 Days of Y’ello Care campaign is also a competition amongst MTN’s 22 operating companies across MTN Group.

The Operating country which secures the highest number of staff involved in volunteerism and projects with remarkable impact wins the ultimate prize of $100,000 to be reinvested in community projects.

MTN Ghana remains one of the most awarded country for volunteerism and projects picking up Leadership Award in 2016, Integrity Award in 2015, Innovation Project award in 2014,ICT Project, 2013, overall Y’ello Care Challenge winners for two years 2010 & 2011 and the 2008 WECA (West and Central Africa) Regional award.
