MTN Ghana CEO Advises Winners of World Robotics Competition

Accra, Ghana, June 7, 2019//-The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Selorm Adadevoh has advised winners of the senior division of the World Robofest Championship to concentrate on their strengths to enable them rise to the top in the field of science and technology.

He gave the advice when the students of the Mamfi Girls’ Senior High School in the Eastern Region who recently won the competition in the United States (U.S), paid courtesy call on him at the MTN Ghana headquarters in Accra.

Mr Adadevoh also advised them to further show more interest in the study robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain and other related disciplines to help provide solutions to address the challenges of the country.

He admonished the students not to allow complacency to set in after winning the iconic award but they should rather concentrate on their books.

The CEO said the telecoms company was ready to support them in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) which are critical in this technological revolution.

Mr Adadevoh used the occasion to throw more light on the activities and services of MTN Ghana and what the company stands for.

Touching on the corporate social investments of the telecoms firm, the Corporate Services Executive of MTN Ghana, Samuel Koranteng said the company had invested in over 140 projects in education, health and economic empowerment across the country.

These projects according to him have impacted the lives of over 4 million people in the West African country.

On their part, the students thanked the CEO and the executives of MTN Ghana for giving them the opportunity to visit and interact with them.

The students were later conducted around the offices of company to familiarise themselves with the company’s operations.

Background

The country was represented at the World Robofest Championship by all-girls robotics team from the Mamfi Girls’ Senior High School in the U.S.

They won the topmost position by beating teams from the U.S, Mexico, Egypt, South Korea and dozens of others.

The nine-member girl team named as Team Acrobot dominated the 10 broad and challenging categories of the championship held from May 16 to 18 at the Lawrence Technological University (LTU), Southfield, Michigan in the U.S.

The categories include the Game (Complete robotic missions), Exhibition (Show off projects), Vision Centric Challenge (Develop robots to solve problems using cameras), Unknown Mission Challenge (Surprise missions), and RoboArts (Robotics music, dance and arts competition),

The team was able to build a robot that arranged boxes according to a binary number they were given during the competition. They also completed their missions successfully.

Team Acrobot qualified from the national championship level called the Robotics Inspired Science Education (RISE) competition organised by the Ghana Robotics Academy Foundation in January, 2019. They beat several teams before qualifying for the World Robofest Championship.

Since 1999, Robofest has been organised to offer students the opportunity to master principles of STEM as well as Computer Science (CS), communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and problem solving skills while designing, constructing, and programming robots.
